Every budgeting tool, by category

This page lists every category on NeedSaving, from envelope budgeting apps to tax software, with the number of tools in each. Pick the category that matches the job you want done, then open a tool page for a short description, the facts we could confirm, and a link to its official site.

If you are new to budgeting, start with envelope budgeting or the all-in-one money apps. If you share costs with other people, go to spending trackers and shared expenses. If recurring charges and rising bills are the problem, the subscriptions and bills category covers trackers, virtual cards and negotiation services.

For freelancers and anyone who itemizes, the receipts and expenses category and the tax prep category belong together. Receipts sorted through the year make filing faster and give you records if questions come later. People who want their money data on their own machine will find spreadsheet feeds and open-source software in the self-hosted category.

Every category page opens with a short explanation of what that kind of tool does and what to check before you sign up, followed by the tools and a set of common questions. Tool pages list the facts we could confirm, such as a free plan, a mobile app, bank connections, AI features or open-source code. Where we could not confirm something, the page says not enough info.

Last, the AI chat category covers general assistants people use to build a budget table or understand a money term. They don't connect to your accounts, and the category explains what not to paste into them. Nothing on this site is financial advice, and every listing is written by us, with paid placements marked Sponsored. If you know the tool you want, the search page finds it by name, maker or task in a few keystrokes, and the home page has a short guide to choosing a budgeting app.

Questions about NeedSaving

Which category should I start with?

Start with the job you need done. To plan spending, use envelope budgeting. To see everything in one place, use the all-in-one apps. To split costs, use shared expenses.

Why are some tools missing?

We only publish tools we can confirm exist and work as described. Tools we are unsure about stay off the site until we check them. You can suggest a tool through the submission form.

How often is the directory updated?

We rebuild it when we add tools, correct a listing or remove one that closed. Each tool page shows the date it was last checked.
